Chapter Eleven

It was a gorgeous day, with a bright-blue sky providing a stunning backdrop for the mountains that filled the landscape and surrounded us on our trail ride through fresh, green meadows dotted with various wildflowers. A picturesque, right out of a travel brochure, view. Settings like this didn’t exist in real life, except they did, and I was right in the middle of it.

In fact, the group of us, trailing one after another on horseback in perfect formation, would make the perfect promotional photo. Because how could anyone look at such a scene and not want to be exactly where I was?

Imagine if Rock Creek Ranch used such an image on their website with a caption like, “Take a relaxing ride through the untouched countryside to take your mind off your very own sexy cowboy who makes your body come alive in ways it’s never felt before.”

Or maybe…

“Come to Rock Creek Ranch, where you can play hot, steamy sexual games with a real-life cowboy who makes you feel things and think things you know can’t possibly be real, and yet…”

The idea of using any of my sexual exploits with Dylan in promotional material, of all things, made me laugh out loud, so suddenly Pepper startled beneath me, and in front of me, Brittany turned around.

“What’s so funny?”

I shook my head. Even if I wanted to talk about what had happened, I didn’t know how and frankly, the trail ride seemed like the last place to have such a conversation. “I was just thinking of—”

“A certain smoking-hot cowboy?” Brittany drew her horse back so we were walking side by side on the trail. “What exactly did happen back there, Sandy?” Before I could answer, my friend added, “And don’t even tell me nothing, because I saw the flush on your face when you came out again. Whatever happened in there, it was enough to get your heart rate up.”

“I don’t really know if this is the place to talk about it.” I glanced around, but everyone else was far enough away that they wouldn’t hear us talking, even if they weren’t completely lost in their own experiences and conversations.

“So something did happen?”

Britany was smart, and she knew me very well. That was the problem with having friends who knew you better than you knew yourself sometimes. I sighed.

“I went in there to see if he’d talk to me.”

“Why wouldn’t he?”

“He’s been avoiding me ever since we…you know. It’s not like I’m expecting flowers, chocolates, and love songs, you know, but I also didn’t think—”

“He was the hit it and forget it type?”

“Exactly.” I shrugged and decided not to tell Britt about the crazy connection I was sure we had by the river. I didn’t need to make it more than it had been. “So I confronted him.”

“Of course you did.”

“And you know what? He was mad because somehow he found out that he was my first since Greg died. As if it matters.”

Brittany pressed her lips together but didn’t respond.

“It doesn’t,” I said, maybe more for me than for her.
